Today we will review sciatica symptoms and treatment options. Sciatica is the term used to describe irritation of the sciatic nerve. In some cases sciatica may be referred to as a pinched nerve. Sciatic nerve treatments are effective if the causes of the symptoms are addressed
Symptoms associated with sciatica include numbness and tingling sensations that emanate from the lower back and radiate into the buttocks and down the leg. People will often describe symptoms as ranging from a burning sensation, to an electrical shock, to a “hot poker or scalding water” running down the leg. Most sciatica symptoms resolve on their own but sometimes treatment is necessary for fast pain relief.
Treatment of sciatica should be geared towards identifying and resolving whatever is creating the irritation and subsequent inflammation. Initially, severe pain in the lower back and the accompanying radiating symptoms need to be treated with anti-inflammatory medication. In severe cases of sciatica, an oral steroid is helpful in resolving the issue. When an oral medication is ineffective, epidural steroid injections can be quite helpful.
Other treatment options might include piriformis muscle injections, spinal decompression when a herniated disc is believed to be the source of the problem, physical therapy, or, when all else has failed, surgery.
In the video below, we review sciatica symptoms and treatment in a little more detail. Remember, sciatica symptoms are not always the result of a herniated disc. Other structures that can result in sciatica symptoms include lumbar spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis.
