Piriformis muscle pain or piriformis syndrome as it is sometimes referred to is essentially sciatica lower back pain caused by irritation of the piriformis muscle.
The piriformis muscle is a small muscle that runs from the tail bone region to the hip joint area. The clinical significance of the piriformis muscle is its relationship to the sciatic nerve. Because of this relationship, irritation of the piriformis muscle can result in symptoms suggestive of a lumbar pinched nerve.
In cases where the piriformis muscle is irritated, sciatica pain relief can only be achieved by direct treatment to the piriformis muscle itself utilizing specific lower back stretches and sciatica exercises.
In this video, we show you why the piriformis muscle can be a literal pain in the butt.
